Project title: Web-Based Simulation Model for Production Systems Course .

(2003)

Abstract

Simulation and modeling are two areas which are gaining great popularity in today's industrial environment. Significant improvements can be accomplished in different areas within a company if these two areas work simultaneously. Various simulation software applications like Quest@, Arena@, ProModel@, AutoMod@ and Witness@ are currently used for modeling different kind of systems and for exploring new ideas without disrupting the real system. The main objective of the project was to develop a web-based simulation model that can be used for teaching production systems concepts in a practical manner. The model includes a database to store input data. This database was interfaced with the simulation model developed in ARENA@. Two additional production parameters were also included in the model like a cost penalty per order, and a resource change penalty. An illEFO model was developed for demonstrating the structured approach to provide guidelines to students for performing a simulation study. An "As-Is" simulation model was also developed in Quest@ for students to understand the actual process by visualizing the factory. They will observe how parts and workers move between various stations and the flow logic of the process. The impact of newly added parameters: a cost per order penalty and a resource change penalty on the net profit was studied. The results from comparison of net profit before and after modifications in the model show a 5.51% reduction in profit which is quite significant.
