Project title: WAP-Based Inventory Control System Using Software Agents.

(Summer 2002)

Abstract

"The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be the only sustainable competitive advantage" (Martin, 1995). A key business need in today's distributed environment is the ability to respond quickly. In an enterprise, inventory replenishment of a product is frequently determined by the reorder point. The purchasing manager is informed of inventory replenishment either through a purchase requisition forms or through an online inventory alert system. The manual requisition method is time consuming with a high danger of exhausting the safety stock and stopping the line. The online system is a dedicated system where, a quick response to a low inventory alert is possible only when an end user or the purchasing manager monitors it continuously. This system can be improved by a wireless notification or an alert mechanism. This project develops a W AP (Wireless Application Protocol) based inventory control system (WBICS) that saves valuable man-hours. The concept of 'Mobile employees' is introduced that can more efficiently contribute to the growth of an enterprise.
