Enterprise Engineering IE880I

Enterprise Engineering is defined as "The body of knowledge, principles, and
disciplines related to the analysis, design, implementation and operation of all elements
associated with an enterprise." EntEng methods include modeling, cost analysis,
simulation, workflow analysis, bottleneck analysis. EntEng concepts include TQM, JIT,
change management, and value added analysis. In a continually changing and unpredictable
competitive environment, the Enterprise Engineer addresses a fundamental question:
"how to design and improve all elements associated with the total enterprise through
the use of engineering and analysis methods and tools to more effectively achieve its
goals and objectives".

Why take the class?
Industrial Engineers and MBA students will profit from this class by
understanding principles for improving an overall enterprise and avoiding suboptimal
(locally optimal) solutions. Students will be able to effect change in the bottom line of
an organization. Students will leave the class with a set of methods and tools that will
make the student an asset to all types of organizations.

The group projects will partially be graded on a competitive basis. In other words,
consider yourself a consultant. The team that I would choose to do the job, will get the
highest score and ranked down the line. Your objective is, in the words of Tom Peters,
"Excite the customer!" For the purpose of this project, I will be your
customer. Alternatively, you can model a company (yours or someone else's
- prior approval required). |

Rules and Policies
Attendance:
Regular participation to the class is mandatory. Outside articles will be presented
during class sessions, and good portion of these materials will be included in the tests.
Exams:
All exams are closed books and notes unless otherwise stated. NO MAKE-UP tests will be
administered. Instead of the final and the second review, a comprehensive
paper may be written (must contribute to the body of knowledge of enterprise
engineering.
Additional points on exams: If you think your exam (or any assignment)
was graded unfairly, then you must fill out a form explicitly articulating
your rationale for additional points. This form is used to force you to do
it in writing. This form must be completed within one week of when the
assignment was returned. then you must bring the assignment to my office and
I will render a decision. Do NOT expect to discuss it with me in my office.
Incomplete Grade:
This grade may be given at the discretion of the course instructor to a student who has
been making satisfactory progress in a course except for work which could not be completed
due to circumstances beyond your control (such as, illness, serious accident, death in
family, natural disaster, etc.). You will be asked to produce evidence of the event being
beyond your control. If incomplete works due to these extraordinary events take place
before the last date to withdraw, then you should withdraw from the course. An incomplete
for a course must be removed by the end of the next semester or it will change to F.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned and collected ONLY at the beginning of a class session. They
are typically assigned on Monday and collected on the following Wednesday. No credit will
be given to late assignments. Number of problems will be selected at random for grading.
